What to Do If My Wedding Ring Washed Down the Drain

Nothing can throw you into panic like your wedding ring accidentally falling down the sink drain. Maybe you are washing your hands at the sink and your wedding ring comes loose from your finger and gets washed down the drain. This moment can be dreadful, but the good news is that all is not lost. With basic DIY plumbing skills and the right tools, you can recover items that accidentally fall down the sink.

Here at Neighborhood Plumbing, we will walk you through the process of getting back a wedding ring that gets stuck in the sink.

Step 1: Turn Off the Water

The first step is to turn off the water immediately to prevent the ring from being washed further down the drain.

Step 2: Place a Bucket under the P-Trap

This will help you catch any water or debris that may spill out when you remove the trap. This can help prevent any mess or damage to your home.

Step 3: Shine a Flashlight down The Drain

If the wedding ring didn’t go deep down the drain, you can shine a flashlight to see if you can spot the ring. If it's visible, you may be able to retrieve it using long tweezers or needle-nose pliers.

Step 4: Remove the P-Trap

To remove the P-trap, locate the slip nuts on either end of the P-trap and use a pair of pliers to loosen them. You may need to use some force, but be careful not to damage the nuts or the P-trap itself. Once the slip nuts are loosened, you should be able to remove the P-trap by hand. If it's stuck, gently twist and pull until it comes loose.

If your P-trap has an access plug or drain plug, simply pull it out, and the water will pour into the bucket with your ring. If you're unsure about how to remove the P-trap safely, it's advisable to call a plumber in Fox Chapel who can do it for you.

If your wedding ring doesn’t flow out with the water, it's likely that it's lodged somewhere in the drain. Try using a drain snake or a wire coat hanger to dislodge it. Insert the drain snake or wire coat hanger into the drain and move it around to dislodge the ring.

If You Don’t Succeed, Call a Professional Plumber

If you’re unable to recover the ring, it's best to seek the help of a professional plumber. They will have the proper tools and expertise to safely remove the ring without damaging it or the sink.
